What are the racewear trends for Melbourne Cup 2018? How will you ace the racewear trends 2018?
The trick to getting it right is about adding a central focus to your outfit. Accessorise a flamboyant frock with muted accessories. A bejewelled clutch should be offset with minimal jewellery. A statement hat should be worn with an understated dress.
The inaugural event of Melbourne Spring Racing Festival, Derby Day is a traditionalist’s delight. Derby Day is set in the classic mode, with strict etiquette and dress code to follow. Derby Day is about monochrome, tints and tones of black and white.
Black and white, in all its avatars, took over the city on Derby Day 2018. The sea of monochrome seemed to complement the grey skies. Men veered towards tints and tones of grey, ranging from silver to charcoal. Women wore lace dresses – white lace on white – black lace on white. Polka dots, big and small, were visible on swinging wrap dresses. Some women shimmered in head to toe silver. There were solid black dresses or white. Colour blocking on dresses, alternating between black and white, made bold statements. Clutch bags in black, white and silver completed the Derby Day outfits. Hats ranged from fascinators to the more versatile tiaras, boaters and sun hats. Some brave racegoers defied tradition and chose to dress as colourful as the Rosellas.
What are the racewear trends for Melbourne Cup Day 2018?
Passion and intensity are high on the list of must-haves this Cup Day. The in the know palette is top to toe carmine. Wear head to toe red, beginning with red headwear, dress, clutch bag and shoes. If red is not your poison, you may wear hot pink, coral or aubergine.
Florals are in, again. But florals in 2018, are bold, dark and gothic. Mysterious florals interspersed with jewel tones will bloom everywhere.
Demure dresses in coral, red, aubergine and primrose will rule. Bold poppies in coral and fresh daisies in aqua and yellow
will dispel the gloom of a rainy Cup Day.
Keep it structured:
A racewear frock needs a racewear headgear and a racewear clutch bag. Structured accessories will offset colourful dresses. Keep them architectural and sculpted. The boxy clutch
is trending at the moment. Fashioned out of chain mail, hand beaded embellished with rhinestones, the variety is myriad. Opt for a classic Gatsby clutch or add a hint of boho chic with a brocade bag with danglers. A classic clutch bag does not have side slings, hence the name clutch. Side slings are a recent modification to classic clutch bags. They keep your hands free for the mint juleps and the canapés.
High Shine Metallics:
Winking silver and glistening gold will add sparkle to dresses and bags. Intimidated by head to toe shimmer? Add it in small doses – in a matte gold clutch bag or diamante’ shoes.
Feathers and Frills:
Trims and embellishments will include feathers and frills with a bit of swish. Feathers on fascinators and flounces on dresses will reflect this trend.
A racewear post is incomplete without a reference to headwear. Tiaras are a popular and practical option. But nothing can beat the appeal of a custom-made fascinator. A milliner can radically improve your racewear persona. She will study your face, complexion and hair. Ideally, you should have three fittings with your milliner. Communicate your likes and dislikes, colour preferences and dress options when you meet your milliner. Have an interim meeting for a trial fitting. Your milliner will do the final tweaks on the spot at the third meeting and voila, you will be racewear ready!
A note of caution. The weatherman has predicted rain, wind and thunderstorm on Cup Day. Carry a scarf to cover those bare arms and shoulders. Have a brollie ready to combat a possible downpour.
